“I’m getting married for the second time next winter. We are both in our early forties and are having quite an intimate ceremony and reception with close family and a few friends. I feel like a lot of wedding dresses are a bit too dramatic for me and are made for 20-somethings, but I obviously want to wear something really special for my big day. I’m not wholly against wearing white, I just want to look elegant and not too fussy (but still look like a bride!) on the day. What are the alternatives to the grand white wedding dress? Should I still be looking in wedding dress shops?” – Aoife

There are loads of alternatives to the traditional wedding dress. Consider going funky and short, slinky and 1920’s or 30’s, Grecian and floaty… or you could play around with colour or with interesting accessories. We have it all instore and are happy to make suggestions to suit your day.

There are lots of alternatives. Most labels do carry what’s called “Informal & Destination” dresses. Usually these will be a lighter weight gown and many times will have less of a train. Also consider some evening wear dresses – most bridesmaid labels can have all dresses made in any colour including white, ivory, champagne etc. The good news is that these are usually very budget friendly too!

Hi Aoife, there are so many options available so don’t worry. Firstly there are less formal ranges of gowns such as Mori Lee ‘Voyage’ that you could consider. You could also look at the option of getting any Dessy dress or Liz Fields bridesmaid dress in ivory or white. Or you could select a specific colour theme that you would like for your wedding and wear that colour yourself, this is your special day and you want to feel as comfortable as possible.
