Creative Colourful DIY wedding by Mrs Redhead Photography

Jeanne and Jimmy were married just before Christmas, last year. We are so excited to share this day of love with you! Full of colour, creativity, family values and lots of love, Olga from Mrs RedHead Photography sure had fun capturing this unique and awesome day, which their Parish Priest referred to as a Community Wedding! You’re going to love it!

Jeanne and Jimmy are both from Ennistymon, and although neither are too sure where they first met – maybe school, or possibly work – they both know they began dating right after Jeanne turned 18.

“We both knew early on things were right. We had the same visions and dreams, and weird sense of humour, soul mates. We spoke about getting married from the very beginning so there wasn’t really ‘a proposal’ as such. The question was asked numerous times throughout our years together but the time was just never right. During the summer of 2014, the question came up again and this time it just felt right for both of us,” explained Jeanne.

The couple, who have three children were keen to plan a casual wedding with as little fuss as possible. After being guests at Jeanne’s brothers wedding the previous summer in the park, they both felt positive to go with a wedding that suited them.

“Everything just fell into place for us really…we chose to get married quietly on the winter solstice and we will throw a pot-luck ‘Happily Ever After Party’ outside our house on the summer solstice this year. At the last minute, we decided to have refreshments after the winter ceremony in the hall to let people have a chat and escape the bad weather. Most people made some food and brought it along…it turned into quite the fancy feast. We didn’t send out any invites for the winter part, we just let our closest family and friends know the time and place if they wanted to witness the ceremony.

I kept my outfit and bouquet a secret so Jimmy decided the decoration of the hall would be ‘his secret’. It was absolutely amazing. He strung up the kids’ pictures as bunting and even had an ivy decorated arch with mistletoe hung from it at the entrance. Everybody pitched in and the place was utterly transformed in record time!” added Jeanne.

Jeanne wore a stunning dress she had picked up on a last minute trip to TK Maxx in Limerick:

“After spending a day trying on dresses in a bridal boutique I soon realised I couldn’t justify spending a fortune on a heavy dress that I would wear for only a few hours. We have three kids aged 8, 6 and 4 so we definitely wanted value for money. When I walked through the doors of TK Maxx I spotted a dress. The only white dress in amongst a bunch of glamorous debs dresses. It just happened to be my size and after trying it on I realised that I was going to be comfortable on my wedding day. The only problem was it was see-through from the knee down. After buying a white nightdress on sale in Dunnes and the craftsmanship of a great tailor the problem was rectified. Just to cover my bare shoulders I ordered a cheap crochet shawl from EBAY…dress, material, tailoring, shawl and my shoes (which were another accidental find) and my entire wedding outfit was a bargain! I most definitely got my value for money and I can even reuse the dress!” said Jeanne.

Jeanne and Jimmy didn’t plan to have any particular theme on their day and instead focused on including as many colours as possible.

“We just love colours…they make us happy so we tried to inject colour everywhere we could….purple, orange, green, blue, and many more. Having things handmade by yourself and people you know makes the day much more special. We have three kids ourselves and so it was natural for the children to be involved in both the preparations and celebrations,” explained Jimmy.

Although battered by wind and rain, Jeanne and Jimmy’s day was pretty perfect for them!

“It rained and the wind was ferocious but none of that made a difference to our enjoyment of the day, it just added some character.

At the last minute, just before we were about to walk down the aisle, Eli, (our assertive 4 yr old who was tasked with being ring-bearer), decided instead that he wanted to be a ‘flower-man’ and he also wanted to hold his little cousin’s hand so he ditched the walking order that the priest arranged the night before and did it his own way. He ended up with the bridesmaid’s bouquet and the bridesmaid ended up with the rings.
Also a musician cancelled a few days before the wedding but it worked out beautifully in the end…my best friend’s dad learned ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ from the Lion King and played me down the aisle on the flute,” said Jeanne.

Highlight of the day

For both of us: The whole day was special. We really felt the loving vibes. Just being surrounded by love and the people we care about and marrying your best friend. We didn’t have a worry in the world. We were really living and basking in the moment.
One special part for Jimmy: Seeing Jeanne walking down the aisle.
One special part for Jeanne: Exchanging the rings was definitely emotional! Also, I loved having a special table for our deceased loved ones. We lit a candle at their table and I had a picture of my father and grandmother in a locket on my bouquet…it was like they were there with us.
